Computer Programs

Spatial Resolution and Distortion

Spatial resolution is the greatest disadvantage of digital imaging. Through lessons and interactive drills, the user will learn why spatial resolution is so poor with digital imaging and how he/she can maximize the spatial resolution in an image. The user will learn how geometric factors, motion factors and image receptors affect spatial resolution. There are animations, pictures and exercises that will help the user to understand the adverse affects and causes of size and shape distortion. The quizzes at the end of the modules will help the user determine how well he/she understands spatial resolution and distortion in digital imaging. The user can progress through the lessons at his/her own pace and can repeat the lessons until he/she has a thorough knowledge of spatial resolution and distortion in digital imaging.

Brightness and Contrast

Brightness and contrast are what renders those great looking digital images. Through lessons and interactive drills, the user will learn the three functions of a histogram and the way look-up tables work. The user will learn how quantum noise, saturation, collimation, scatter, grids, fog, subject contrast, postprocessing and ambient light can prevent the system from rendering the perfect brightness and contrast. There are animations, pictures and exercises that will help the user to understand how these factors affect the visibility of detail. The quizzes at the end of the modules will help the user determine how well he/she understands brightness and contrast in digital imaging. The user can progress through the lessons at his/her own pace and can repeat the lessons until he/she has a thorough knowledge of brightness and contrast in digital imaging.

Exposure to Digital Image Receptors

Digital image receptors require a certain amount of exposure in order to have enough information to render an optimum digital image. Through lessons and interactive drills, the user will learn about flat-panel detectors, imaging plates and how much exposure each requires. Dose area product (DAP) and exposure indicator numbers are covered. The user will learn how mAs, kVp, SID, grids, fog, part thickness and part density affect the exposure to a digital image receptor. There are animations, pictures and exercises to help the user understand these factors. The quizzes at the end of the modules will help the user determine how well he/she understands what affects digital image receptor exposure. The user can progress through the lessons at his/her own pace and can repeat the lessons until he/she has a thorough knowledge of digital image receptor exposure.

Digital Image Quality

Digital Image Quality uses tutorials, exercises and explanations that will help the user learn the factors that affect the quality of a digital image. The user will learn (1) which factors affect spatial resolution, distortion, exposure, brightness and contrast; (2) how the digital image will be affected when the various factors are changed; (3) the definitions of the factors that control digital image quality; and (4) whether the quality of the digital image increases or decreases when a factor is changed. Terms like ambient light, field of view, matrix size, post processing, quantum noise and saturation will become familiar to the user.

Radiographic Contrast

The Radiographic Contrast program is an interactive way of learning a difficult subject matter. It demands the user's attention by constantly requiring him/her to interact with the computer. At the end of each module, a short quiz tests the user's knowledge and reveals what percentage of the information he/she has learned. The need for radiographic contrast; the scales of contrast; the proper use of terminology; radiographic contrast's controlling factor; the affects of scattered radiation on contrast; exposure latitude; how grids, collimation, and compression affect radiographic contrast; plus more are all covered by interactive exercises and comparing radiographs. The user can progress through the lessons at his/her own pace and may repeat the lessons until he/she has a thorough knowledge of radiographic contrast.

Radiographic Density

The Radiographic Density program is the 3rd in a series on radiographic quality. It is an interactive way of learning how the various factors of radiographic density affect the visibility of detail. Through lessons and interactive drills, the user will learn of the need for radiographic density; the controlling factor of density; and the affects of kVp, SID, fog, grids, screens, filtration, anatomy and pathology on radiographic density. Each of these factors are throughly explained and radiographs are used to enhance the learning process. There are several math exercises where the user can change values to see how mA affects mAs, or how distance and mAs are related or what the new mAs will be when grid ratios are changed. At the end of each module the user takes a quiz to determine if he/she understands the information presented in the interactive lesson. The user can progress through the lessons at his/her own pace and can repeat the lessons until he/she has a thorough knowledge of radiographic density.

Recorded Detail and Distortion

The Recorded Detail & Distortion program is the 4th in a series on radiographic quality. It is an interactive way of learning how the various factors of recorded detail and distortion affect the sharpness of detail. Through lessons and interactive drills, the user will learn of the need for recorded detail; the controlling factor of recorded detail; and the affects of geometric factors, motion factors and material factors on recorded detail. Each of these factors are thoroughly explained and radiographs are used to enhance the learning process. There are animations, pictures and exercises that will help the user to understand the adverse affects and causes of size and shape distortion. At the end of each module the user takes a quiz to determine if he/she understands the information presented in the interactive lesson. The user can progress through the lessons at his/her own pace and can repeat the lessons until he/she has a thorough knowledge of recorded detail and distortion.
